Selectives

Selectives increase the breadth of exposure in the subspecialties and builds clinical and technical skills.

Hematopathology/Procedures/Specialty Hematology Clinics

During this 4- week selective, you will have additional dedicated training and develop experience in performing bone marrow aspirations and biopsies as well as lumbar punctures.  Through formal and informal one-one-one teaching with our hematopathology attending physicians, you will learn to review peripheral blood smears and bone marrow specimens, and interpret cytometry.  With a continued focus on hematology, you will also attend comprehensive hemoglobinopathy clinic, comprehensive hemophilia clinic, immune hematology clinic, thrombosis clinic, vascular anomalies clinic, and adolescent menstrual bleeding clinic.

Specialty Practices Rotation

During this 4-week selective you will gain exposure to pediatric pathology and neuropathology, radiation oncology, and pediatric surgical subspecialties to better under how these teams contribute to the care of our patients. Fellows are given opportunities to visit IROC – the imaging and radiation oncology core for clinical trial quality assurance.   Whenever possible, fellows will follow a newly diagnosed solid tumor patient from initial diagnosis to the operating room and then the pathology suite to understand the complexities of their treatment planning.

Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine/Research Planning

During this 4-week in the spring, fellows will spend time with the blood bank and transfusion medicine training program which includes both didactics and hands-on laboratory experience which contributes to the depth of our program’s hematology training.    The remainder of the month will be focused on formally establishing your research plans and goals for the second and third year of fellowship.  Program leadership will facilitate introductions to laboratory and/or clinical mentors and will support the development of specific aims by the beginning of the second year.

Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy

As a fellow at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, you will have significant exposure to the pre- and post-SCT management of pediatric transplant patients, gaining experience in the determination of SCT candidates, HLA typing, pre-SCT evaluation, and post-SCT routine management, complications and longitudinal care. Additionally, you will also spend at least 4 weeks rotating on the transplant service at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital. This rotation exposure to the management of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy in the acute setting.  Additional SCT electives at other outside institutions can be arranged for interested fellows.
