Fellowship training in pediatric hematology/oncology at Brown is comprehensive and immersive, comprising hands-on clinical experiences, conferences and lectures, and targeted learning opportunities.
The first year of fellowship at Brown is focused on providing an immersive clinical experience. You will spend most of the year on the inpatient service, directly caring for patients. This service manages all of the pediatric hematology and oncology patients on our service, as well as performing inpatient consultations at both Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Women and Infants Hospital (NICU and Newborn Nursery).
The fellow is responsible for supervising the inpatient team, consisting of pediatric residents, nurse practitioners, and medical students. Under the direct supervision of an attending, you will lead rounds, formulate care plans, perform consultations and direct the responsibilities of the team members. The first year also consists of several selective blocks for more focused experiences.
First Year Schedule
- ½ day per week of hematology continuity clinic
- ½ day per week of oncology continuity clinic
- 8 months on the Hematology/Oncology Inpatient Service
- 1 month of Hematopathology/Procedural Training/Hematology Specialty Clinics (including hemoglobinopathies and bleeding disorders)
- 1 month on Specialty Practices Rotation including experiences in radiation oncology, pathology, pediatric surgery, pediatric neuro-surgery and pediatric radiology.
- 1 month on Blood Bank/Transfusions Medicine and Research Planning
- 4 week of vacation per academic year
Call
Our fellows are responsible for one weeknight of home-call each week and divide the weekends and holidays evenly across the 3 years of training with attending supervision. Fellows ocassionally return to the hospital when on call in the setting of a new pediatric oncology diagnosis or acute emergency.
As a second and third year fellow, you will focus on your chosen area of scholarly activity. Fellows at Brown have the opportunity to pursue laboratory research. There are a several prominent research laboratories are Brown University, Women & Infants Hospital, and Rhode Island Hospital focused on cancer and associated conditions. For fellows who are not interested in laboratory-based projects, we have opportunities for scholarly activity in clinical research, public health initiatives and medical education focused projects.
Second and third year fellows at Brown spend only a limited amount of time on clinical service in order to maximize focus on their academic productivity. Clinical activity in the second and third years of fellowship consists of 2 weeks per year on the inpatient service. You will also spend one month rotating on the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation service at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.
Second and Third Year Schedule
- ½ day per week of hematology continuity clinic
- ½ day per week of oncology continuity clinic
- 20 months dedicated to scholarly work
- 2 weeks on inpatient service during the 2nd year
- 2 weeks on inpatient service as acting attending during the 3rd year
- 1 month on Stem Cell Transplant at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Boston Children’s Hospital (with accommodations to stay in Boston for the month)
- 4 weeks of vacation per academic year
